SIU Mechanical Engineering and Energy Process Studies studies work on the roof of SIU Building
Our graduates learn to apply principles of force, motion, and energy, to design, analyze and build the mechanical and thermal systems that make modern life possible. From HVAC systems to assembly lines, robots to rocket engines, fuel cells to power plants, or an artificial heart powered by nanotechnology, we can provide a focus for your interests and your vision of the future.

Our Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Mechanical Engineering is ABET accredited and has a nearly 100% job placement rate. If your passion is research, our Master of Science (M.S) in Mechanical Engineering and Doctorate (Ph.D.) in Engineering Science deliver broad opportunities for graduate students to engage in advanced research and collaborate with faculty and colleagues. You’ll find our graduates working with companies like Lockheed Martin, Northrup Grumman, NASA, Boeing Corp, John Deere, GM, Cummings, and Tesla.

Bachelor's Program

Our program emphasizes solid, mathematical foundations to prepare you for entry into traditional and emerging career paths and open doors to advanced degrees. We offer specializations in Aerospace Engineering and Energy Engineering, and a minor in Energy Engineering. With more than 50 student organizations and teams to join, you have the opportunities to engage, and all the undergraduate research activities available at a comprehensive research university.

Master's Program

Our program is built for students with undergraduate degrees in mechanical engineering or a closely related field. Our faculty come from major universities across the nation to put their own research in your classroom, giving you practical experience and access to advanced equipment you won’t find just anywhere – we’ve got labs for thermal management, biomechanics, non-destructive evaluation, tracking by micro-robotics, materials processing for fuel cells and more.

PhD in Engineering Science

The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Engineering Science with emphasis in Mechanical Engineering and Energy Processes is designed for students pursuing careers requiring advanced, high-level preparation with emphasis on theories of curriculum and instruction and in-depth preparation in research.
