Dorothy M. Muzzey Loan Fund
Students who are enrolled in a major in Kinesiology (undergraduate or graduate) can apply for a loan through the Dorothy M. Muzzey Loan Fund. In the event the student meets a set of requirements at the completion of the degree program, the loan amount will not need to be paid back to the University. Students receiving the loan will be named "Department of Kinesiology Muzzey Scholars."
Requirements:
- Accepted and enrolled full-time in a major in the Department of Kinesiology.
- Undergraduates must have SIUC GPA of at least 2.75 and Graduates 3.0.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Graduate of a southern Illinois high school (counties of Alexander, Pulaski, Massac, Union, Johnson, Pope, Hardin, Jackson, Williamson, Saline, Gallatin, Randolph, Perry, Franklin, Hamilton, White, Monroe, St. Clair, Washington, Jefferson, Wayne, Edwards, and Wabash counties).
- Need, as demonstrated by filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
- Commitment to field of study.
Application Process:

- Cover letter and brief statement about request for loan (including need and amount).
- Transcript (unofficial from SalukiNet).
- Financial need as evidenced on financial aid award letter (award letter can be obtained from SalukiNet).
- Application materials should be dropped off in the main office (Davies 107).
Other:
- Applications due April 15th each year.
- Can receive loan more than once.
Forgiveness Clause:
IF YOU MEET ALL OF THESE, YOU WILL NOT NEED TO PAY BACK THE LOAN:
- Graduate from one of the Kinesiology programs at SIU.
- SIU GPA of 2.75 (undergraduate) or 3.0 (graduate).
- Meet one of the following criteria:
- Certified to teach in Physical Education Teacher Education and graduate of Physical Education Teacher Education Program
- Certified in Athletic Training and graduate of Athletic Training Education Program
- Undergraduate Degree in other Kinesiology majors
- Graduate Degree in Kinesiology
Kinesiology Scholarships
In addition to this funding, the Kinesiology program offers a number of specialized award opportunities. Qualifying criteria and award amounts vary. Check out the individual awards listed below:
- Dorothy Davies Kinesiology Award
- Be a woman Kinesiology major.
- Have a 3.0 or better overall SIU GPA.
- Be active in at least one university organization or activity. Participation and leadership in campus activities will be considered on an equal basis with participation and leadership in departmental activities. Membership in professional organizations, officiating and community service is helpful but not required. A student may receive this award more than once.
- Carol Lee Swim Memorial Award
- Adventurous, fun-loving, dedicated, dependable, ethical, healthy, thorough, efficient, idealistic, trustworthy, and professional.
- Lingle/Ittner Family Memorial Award
- Be a graduating male senior in kinesiology.
- Have lettered in a varsity sport at SIU.
- Have an overall GPA of 3.00 or higher.
- Show leadership in professional and campus activities.
- Jean Stehr Scholarship
- Robert "Doc" Spackman Memorial Award
- A senior in kinesiology specializing in athletic training who espouses personal and professional qualities of Robert Spackman.
- An outstanding student and athletic trainer.
- Dr. Edward J. Shea Memorial Scholarship Endowment
- Must be a kinesiology major.
- Must be a member of the SIU varsity men's swim team and maintain eligibility to compete on the team.
- Must maintain a grade point average that will allow the scholarship award recipient to graduate in his major.
- Graduate Student Achievement Award
- Academic performance.
- Work experience.
- Service and outside activities.
- Research and scholarly activities.
The recipient of this award must:
Female students from three other universities are also eligible for this award. There are no specific grade point requirements.
The recipient of this award must be a female kinesiology major who possesses the following attributes:
The final selection will be made by a committee of faculty members who knew Carol Swim from the nominees chosen by the participating universities.

This award is given to a junior/senior student preparing for a career teaching physical education. The recipient must have a 2.5 or higher overall SIU GPA, with a minimum 3.00 GPA in physical education. The recipient must also display the qualities of dedication, professionalism and integrity so exemplified in the life and career of Jean Stehr.

The Dr. Edward J. Shea Memorial Scholarship Endowment is open to all applicants with the following qualifications:
Recipient may re-apply as long as ALL above criteria are met.
This is an annual award presented to an outstanding graduate student in Kinesiology. The recipient is evaluated in the following categories:
The award amounts are contingent upon contributions and available funding. Our students greatly appreciate donations made toward any of these awards.
