Alumni Stories

Brenda Smith sitting at a tableFor me as a returning student with some college credits, the University Studies program was the quickest path to earning a degree. I was able to receive credit for work I had already done and it allowed me the flexibility to select courses that specifically targeted my personal and professional goals. Rather than being limited to a single major, this interdisciplinary approach allowed me to combine courses from different programs to create my own unique experience. I also benefited from collaborating with peers and educators from multiple fields, which deepened my knowledge, broadened my skills and increased my networking opportunities. My BS in University Studies has provided a solid foundation to continue my education in graduate school and has helped me develop skills well-suited for many professions. I am very happy with my choice to pursue the University Studies degree at SIU.

Brenda Smith sitting at a tableAs a University Studies alumna with a B.S. degree, I chose this program because of its flexibility and interdisciplinary approach, which allowed me to tailor my education to align with my evolving interests and career goals. The ability to combine courses from different areas gave me a broader perspective and helped me develop a well-rounded skill set that has proven invaluable in both academic and professional settings. One of the most rewarding aspects of the program was the freedom to choose classes that genuinely interested me, an opportunity that led me to discover my passion for Africana Studies. What began as an academic curiosity quickly turned into a deeply personal journey, inspiring me to pursue a second degree, a Bachelor of Arts in Africana Studies. The program encouraged critical thinking, adaptability, and self-direction; qualities that continue to serve me well beyond graduation. Today, I’m applying those skills in filmmaking and writing books dedicated to Black history and culture, where the diverse background I gained through University Studies gives me a unique edge. For incoming students, this program offers a personalized path to success, especially if you’re looking to explore multiple disciplines or design a degree that fits your individual vision.
